Today we spent time exploring in more detail some of the area we had already covered the first few days. Now that we had some perspective on what the rest of the island looked like, we wanted to look at the area we'd chosen to live in a little more closely. First we went down to Anuene Wawae Road (bottom of image) just to see what that was like. Then we went back up to Pahoa Marketplace a funky little shopping area which included Malama's Market, Pahoa Hardware, Pahoa Propane & Battery, and the Aloha Outpost, an internet café. After that, we headed out to the Kapoho-Kumukahi Lighthouse (green line) where the morning sun first hits the Hawaiian Islands. While in that area, we explored the Kapoho housing subdivision and the Wai Opae Tide Pools. CLICK IMAGES TO ENLARGE

We saw in the papers that the waterfalls on the Big Island were at their fullest because of all the rain so we decided to check out Akaka Falls north of Hilo.
How about this "tree"?
There was a bit of a walk from the parking lot through an incredibly exotic park full of the most incredible vegetation with streams running through it. It was still raining.
